1947 Telephone from Ericsson
This formed the basis of the British 1000 type. Note the traditional Ericsson features of the front number label and side cord entry, plus of course the Ericsson dial, features missing from UK models.
GEC 1000 type
This is the GEC version, which was produced from the mid 1950s. Several colours were available but always with black handset and dial to reduce the number of coloured spares that would otherwise have been necessary.This colour combination might be called ‘liquorice allsorts’! The GEC versions used a bakelite handset which was very similar to the handset which would later be used on the 700 type, though it had more curved sides than the 700. Also, the GEC versions had vents in the body side for use in tropical conditions but also useful everywhere as a handgrip.

Another private venture telephone was the 1000 type, produced in 1953 onwards for use on private systems. It was based on the 1947 phone from Ericsson of Sweden, as shown on the second photograph above. Both GEC and Ericsson Telephones produced the design with their own type of handsets. In design, it followed the 300 Type shape but had more rounded features. There was no pull-out tray or support for complex plan set working. The example in the first image above is a rare green version made by Ericsson Telephones for Guernsey, as evidenced by the shield transfer on the front.
