In 1978, the Post Office finally recognised that it couldn’t fight the market for ‘grey’ or unapproved designer telephones, so it decided to join in too. It launched a range of phones, many imported from overseas, to meet the demand for fashion and novelty phones. However, all these phones were re-engineered where necessary to meet Post Office requirements. As with all telephones at the time, they were only available for rental, but unusually were fitted with a Plug 505, so could be interchanged.
