This version of the 200 type telephone was designated Tele 248 on Bellset 39. The bellset had a four way switch allowing a boss/secretary configuration with one or two simple extensions. The overall configuration was known as Plan 5 (two extns.) or Plan 7 (one extn). It replaced an earlier, separate, wooden Bellset No 20, shown in the second photo. The outer panels were designed, optionally, to provide two push buttons to ring trembler bells at the extensions. No similar phone was ever produced in the 300 series, so these phones soldiered on until replaced by the Plan 105/107 in the 700 series. Indeed, the 248 seems to have been designed after the 300 series was introduced and a 300 type phone was often used for the extensions.
